Take a look inside

Stone arch and wall in the building

A house with centuries of history

The apartment is in a building several hundred years old, on Calle del Espíritu Santo. The building has been fully restored, and its exposed stone walls and arches tell part of its story.

The street belongs to the Arrabal, the quarter that grew up outside the medieval walls in the 13th and 14th centuries. It was one of its two main streets, together with the street of the rope-makers, today Calle San Francisco. This is where the craftsmen who made ropes and sails for ships lived, along with tailors, carpenters and stonemasons.

Its name comes from the old Hospital of the Holy Spirit, which took in pilgrims on the Way of St James arriving along the coast. The building stands right next to that hospital, and a few steps away is the Chapel of the Holy Spirit, from the late Middle Ages. Just 20 metres away is the Bilbao Gate, one of the entrances through the old town wall. It is a historic setting that will take you back in time.

  • 1200King Alfonso VIII grants Laredo its town charter and the old town, the Puebla Vieja, is born.
  • 13th–14th centuriesThe Arrabal grows and the town wall is extended to the Bilbao Gate.
  • 15th centuryThe Hospital of the Holy Spirit welcomes pilgrims.
  • 1970The Puebla Vieja is declared a Historic-Artistic Site.
